Some things just don't translate...

Like when you're discussing Aikido at the dinner table.

We've been doing some kumijo katas using broom handles for jo.  Well, none of us is really expert in jo movement, so we've been watching videos and reading up on the different movements involved with each kata.

We all see something a little different, so, at dinner tonight, one of the guys was trying to explain how he thought the first couple of katas went; specifically foot movement.  I tossed a couple of salt and pepper packets and a couple of toothpicks at him and he proceeded to demonstrate what he meant.

I looked over at the newest student (he just started tonight) sitting next to me and asked him if it made any sense to him.  His response:  "You lost me when you got out the salt and pepper packets..."

Have they not taken down the Christmas decorations in the DFAC?

No, those "decorations" are a memorial to the fallen soldiers from Camp Phoenix. They have photos and bios hanging on the wall and a wreath below them. Very sobering. Pretty much every DFAC I've been to here has a memorial like this.

Ah, that would make sense why it's in there. The wreath looks a little Christmasy.
